“TMJ” is an acronym for temporomandibular joint, that is to say, the jaw joint. The temporomandibular joints are the joints in front of the ears attaching the lower jaw to the skull. They are essential to daily jaw functions such as opening and closing your mouth, chewing and speaking.

When the TMJ gets out of whack, it can cause, pain, difficulty in opening or closing, grinding, clenching, facial pain or tinnitus which is ringing in the ears.

Most of the time, tmj treatment  is palliative, meaning we jsut try and reduce the symptoms. In severe cases it is treated by joint surgery. The vast majority of case respond to tmj treatment  via a removable bite plate. This appliance will help the jaws move in harmony and prevent  some of the symptoms.
